Earth Hour 2013 This March 23 at LB o J'zazz

It's all about creating the connections of awareness and commitment throughout our communities and this year through our outreach program and support of other organizations and groups we are taking Earth Hour to another level.  LB o J'zazz in conjunction with the Youth Association of Kuwait will be organizing our Lights Out event at our Shaab Al Bahry location.

Renew your commitment to action  beyond the Hour with the"I Will If You Will" Challenge it is not just about turning the lights off for one hour but reminding ourselves of how the little things we commit to can lead to dramatic change for a better world to live and co-exist in.  This year LB o J'zazz began an initiative with some forward thinking restaurants such as the folks at En Mexico and began collecting their glass soda pop bottles and bottle caps to upcycle with our Decopatch range and into the Soda Pop Bling Earrings in addition to having our waste recycled through MRC.

LB o J'zazz as a small business is always searching for eco friendly products as well as sourcing from manufactures that are moving towards green practices as well as avoiding the use of toxic products.  We avoid any nickel and lead elements in our findings as we work with Tierracast and Vintaj ranges in addition to the Soft Flex Wires in a select range that are considered Green Products.

So join us for some good company, live music and celebrating the only planet we have.  For more information on the global movement Earth Hour you can go to http://earthhour.org/.

From BBQ Grill to Planter

Planting to kick start Earth Month

With Earth Hour approaching, it was no longer fair that I postpone putting plants outside the shop.  Doing things practically, with form and function a priority, while maintaining the spirit of Earth Month at our shop meant that I needed to allow myself to go beyond the typical. On the day before the event, Lubna and I headed to the Friday market looking to up-cycle secondhand items and planter pots was on our list, but nothing suitable was found.

Literally, out of the stillness of my mind, an idea of heading to the tin market emerged.  Now this market largely specializes in large trunks for which many expats would pack items in and ship to their home countries.
Trunks and more

Now what I wanted to do was to block off the parking area in front of our shop to make room for the Earth Hour event planned for the next day.  Yet it was important that whatever is placed there was high enough to be visible to someone sitting in their car, that it was light enough to lift and move, and that beautiful succulents, creepers, and flowers can grow in.

As we browsed through the market scouting, the perfect yet least likely solution dawned to me... a barbeque grill! Yes.. yes.. and why not?  The unconventional always thrilled me.  Besides, it covered every aspect of concern- height, weight, function and practicality.
A stroll through the market

And what made this process well worth sharing is that on the afternoon of Earth Hour, Lubna, Chaminda and I planted.  The sense of touch and connection Earth while smoothing soil around the base of the new planters coupled with being outdoors and the thrill of finally getting to planting at the shop were all a part of a milestone for LB o J'zazz.

What a perfect way to salute and welcome Earth Month at our shop.

Earth Hour jump starts Earth Month

Could it possibly be a whole year already since we hosted our first in-shop Earth Hour event?!  With only a few days to go, March 31st will witness a global movement  whereby individuals, companies and countries will switch lights off in an effort to highlight their concerns around the changing climate and our lifestyles.  This will also mark the beginning for LB o J'zazz's month of activities, classes, exhibitions and events garnered around all things related to sustainability and our precious Mother Earth.

Do join us this Saturday from 8:30 p.m. for 1 HOUR at our shop in Shaab El-Bahry.  All  lights will be switched off and replaced by candle light.  We will sit on the floor, outdoors, and reminisce on stories, experiences, adventures and moments when we were in awe of Earth and her miracles.

We are also very excited to share with you a little special something we arranged with IKEA which will help you help Her (Earth) in a very significant way.

Here's to you, Mother Earth:

Lubna, Chaminda and I look forward to hosting and sharing this special hour and evening with you.  For more information, please call 22610686 or email us at: info@lbojzazz.com.

Until then.. PEACE

(P.S. Do keep some room for some delicious home-made healthy muffins)

Fresh Impressions of LB o J'zazz 2011 Earth Hour

Chaminda this morning dusting, dusting and then more dusting

This morning Chaminda and I started setting up for our special evening in honor of Mother Earth.  Due to the crazy and wild sand storm we had a lot of dust to contend with and candles to lay out. The pictures are grainy as the light was dim and I did my best not to use a flash so that the images are relevant to "Lights Out".
Repurposed paper made into our Special Promotion for the evening

As the lighting got dimmer early in the evening I started working on our special incentives for Earth Hour.  Using some of used brown packing paper and some markers made our own in-house coupons.

Maryam and Chaminda as they start lighting the candle
We had such an incredible evening, and by the time Chaminda and I were done and home it was almost midnight.  What made this so memorable were our guests who came to be part of Earth Hour, they lit candles and hung out as we began our countdown and with the intention of what each and everyone of us will do beyond the 60+.

Our Tree Of Life's Shadow and the flickering flames

Music, homebrewed organic coffee and hot cider along with goodies from our neighbors Divine and a candle lit evening I can say that we are more than ready to have get togethers at the shop with wonderful friends and guests that we always seem to get.
Lights were out in our shop and Divine. The rest of the area was bright as usual
There was a lot of energy in our shopping complex due to our activities and hopefully by 2012, the whole complex and Kuwait will turn their lights and switch to candles for Earth Hour with a long term commitment to what really matters: the quality of our life with some wisdom on how we utilize our resources, waste management and the status of water.
